This refers to an innovative movement in architecture and art that arose in Germany and Austria from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. It aimed to create new plastic arts that were linked to life and functionality, separating itself from past art styles and the authority of academies. It was a movement similar to the Arts and Crafts movement in England and the Art Nouveau movement that followed it and spread throughout Europe, but its decorative direction was completely different, with geometric designs and practicality combined with craft elements, which led to later Art Deco and modern design.
