Collection: Kobe Western Furniture
At the beginning of the Meiji era, a shipwright named "Maki Tokusuke" who came to Kobe from Shiobakojima in Shikoku opened a workshop in Kanomachi, Chuo Ward, Kobe. It is said that Kobe Western furniture began when he used his wooden shipbuilding techniques to copy and manufacture and sell Western furniture and ornaments brought by foreigners. The business grew from a repair business that contracted to repair furniture brought by foreigners to the settlement and a tool merchant that bought and refurbished household goods from foreigners, to a Western furniture industry.
