Collection: Hokkaido Folk Craft Furniture HOKUMIN
Hokkaido Mingei Furniture is a furniture brand established in Hokkaido in 1964 by founder Soichiro Ohara. The concept was "furniture that has a real style, fits well into daily life, and can be used for a long time with care." He was concerned about the abundance of inorganic and tasteless things in Japan, where mass production and mass consumption are the norm. While deepening his friendship with thinker Soetsu Yanagi and Living National Treasure of Mingei Pottery Shoji Hamada, he actively supported the Mingei movement, and later decided to create Mingei furniture himself in Hokkaido, a land boasting abundant natural resources. He trained in woodworking at Matsumoto Mingei in Nagano Prefecture, and established this brand. In 1977, the company merged with Osaka furniture brand Kuraray Interior to become Kuraray Interior Hokkaido Mingei Woodwork. In 2009, Kuraray Interior stopped producing and selling Hokkaido Mingei Furniture, and since then, Gifu furniture brand Hida Sangyo has inherited the brand and manufacturing plant of "Hokkaido Mingei Furniture". Hokkaido folk craft furniture items have been loved by people for a long time. By using genuine materials and applying specialized manufacturing methods, we have produced many pieces of furniture that become more tasteful and beautiful with each use.
