Bill Stumph was born in Minnesota in 1936. He studied industrial design at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He joined Herman Miller Research Corporation in 1970 and began working for Herman Miller. After founding his own company in 1972, he created the Ergon chair, a pioneer of ergonomics. He later collaborated with Don Chadwick to produce the innovative Equa chair and the iconic Aeron chair. As a consultant to Herman Miller, he was involved in various product developments from an ergonomic perspective.
