Collection: Biedermeier style

This interior style was popular in Austria from 1815-48, after the Congress of Vienna until the March Revolution, mainly among the Viennese bourgeoisie, who became wealthy due to the slow and gradual spread of the Industrial Revolution. Like the French Empire style, it is a derivative of Neoclassicism, but its taste is completely different, characterized by an elegant and simple design that is similar to the later Jugendstil. The origin of the word Biedermeier is a combination of the names Biedermann and Bummelmeier, and is the name of a fictional hypocritical character who appeared in the German satirical novel Fliegende Brätter.
