Collection: Makie

A type of decoration in lacquer craft. A pattern is drawn on the surface with lacquer, and then gold, silver, tin powder or colored powder is sprinkled on top and hardened. It is usually applied on a lacquered base, but it is also used on wood and other surfaces, and the Maki-e of the Nara period is considered to be the original form of Maki-e. The name "Maki-e" appears in records and works are said to have existed from the Heian period.
