Collection: USM
Known for the USM Haller System, the pinnacle of modular furniture systems, USM is a long-established Swiss manufacturer with over 100 years of history. USM was founded in 1885 in Münsingen, Switzerland, as a hardware and locksmith business. After World War II, the company expanded its production of metal manufacturing and sheet metal processing, and developed into a small factory. In 1960, Paul Schaerer, the third-generation owner and grandson of USM founder Ulrich Schaerer, who holds a master's degree in engineering, met architect Fritz Haller. Paul Schaerer saw the possibility of realizing his ideal flexible factory architecture in the unique steel modular system proposed by this young architect. Eventually, he worked with Fritz Haller to build a new USM factory and an office annex. The two then began developing a furniture system for use in offices. In 1963, they jointly developed the USM Haller System, a furniture system that flexibly responds to changes in office space by applying the concept of architectural systems to furniture. When USM began production and sales of the USM Haller system in 1969, this revolutionary modular furniture system overturned previous concepts of office interiors, was accepted worldwide, and became an instant hit. The USM Haller system is a historic masterpiece that set a new stage in office furniture, and is still a long-selling, ever-popular piece of furniture around the world today. The success of the USM Haller system led USM to grow into a leading global brand. In 1993, Alexander Schaerer, Paul Schaerer's son, became the fourth generation president. He inherited the corporate philosophy that has embodied the idea of "form follows function" for half a century, and continues to grow as a global company today.
