Shrinkage grain

Shrinkage grain appears perpendicular to the grain direction. The grain appears wavy and wrinkled. It is also called crepe grain, wavy grain, or curly grain. It is also called "violin grain" because it was often used for the decks of stringed instruments such as violins. It appears on chestnut, sycamore, and maples.
