This is a vintage gateleg butterfly table made by ERCOL, a long-established British furniture manufacturer founded in 1920.
When the wings are spread out, it becomes an oval table top, and when folded, it becomes a thin rectangle. When folded, it is compact and does not take up much space, so you can store it easily. It is also possible to fold only one side. This is a table that can be used in different situations, such as spreading it out when guests are present at a party, and folding it compactly for everyday use.
Gateleg Table
In the 16th century, extendable tables that could accommodate guests appeared in England. Among them, the gateleg table, which had legs that supported the extension board and could be opened and closed like a gate, is called a gateleg table, and is still a familiar piece of furniture in British homes today.
The blue label was used from 1954 to around 1976. The version of the label that says [MADE IN ENGLAND] was used from 1957 to 1976.
Lucian Ercolani
Born in Italy in 1888, he became a British citizen in 1923 and founded Ercol. While manufacturing traditional British Windsor-style furniture, the founder of Ercol also broke with tradition and took on the challenge of creating new Windsor designs and timeless modern designs.
ERCOL
Ercol is a long-established furniture manufacturer in the UK. It is a rare brand that continues to receive high support for the same model, both as new furniture and as antiques. Ercol Furniture was founded in High Wycombe in 1920 by Italian-born furniture designer Lucien Arcolani, who immigrated to the UK in the early 20th century. One of the key points of Ercol's success was inventing a method of drying elm wood, which was considered unsuitable for furniture at the time because it was difficult to dry and would warp. The collection combines traditional manufacturing methods, such as the Windsor chair, with modern design, and is light and simple with a casual design. The stacking child chair, designed in 1957, was widely used in facilities such as elementary schools and quickly became a best-selling brand. In recent years, Margaret Howell (British fashion designer) exhibited vintage Ercol stacking child chairs in her London shop, and the Ercol chairs were very well received. This led to Ercol starting to manufacture reproductions of the product in 2002. This reproduction was later sold at Margaret Howell's shop and quickly became popular. Items with the yellow and gold color, commonly known as the Gold Label, from Ercol's heyday in the 1960s and 1970s have long been traded at a premium, but in recent years, including vintage Blue Label items from after that, the prices in the UK have soared to nearly double what they were a decade ago.
Elm wood ulmaceae
The species that is mainly used as wood is called Japanese elm, also known as elm wood. In addition to furniture, it is widely used for tableware, musical instruments, and more. Elms grow over a wide area in the Northern Hemisphere, growing in cold, fertile soil in Hokkaido, Japan, China, Sakhalin, Siberia, and other areas. It is highly valued for its decorative properties due to its interesting grain, and is sometimes used as a surface decorative material in place of zelkova. It is also characterized by its resistance to rot, and its somewhat heavy, hard, and tough nature, making it less likely to crack. Its yellow-white to light brown color and rough texture give it a moist, gentle, and soft impression.
Beech
It is a material with white, fine grain and a property of being difficult to crack, and the surface has small spots of radial tissue. It is strong, has a lot of toughness and elasticity, so it is also ideal as a material for bending wood. The uncolored wood changes to amber color the more it is used.
