Collection: CHARLES & RAY EAMES
Charles and Ray Eames are America's leading designers, masters who have set many milestones in the world of 20th-century design. They are known as pioneers of mid-century modernism. In 1946, Elliot Noyce held an exhibition called "New Furniture Designed by Charles Eames" at the museum. The exhibits included molded plywood lounge chairs, which caused a sensation. Many interior design companies tried to acquire Charles Eames, but they made a contract with Herman Miller, who was very enthusiastic about him. There is an anecdote that George Nelson, the design director at Herman Miller, said, "We should hire the talented Charles Eames even if it means cutting my own design fee." Together with George Nelson, the two created many groundbreaking and innovative furniture pieces. Charles and Ray's activities were not limited to architecture and furniture design, but extended to many other design fields such as film and graphics, and they made many achievements as pioneers of modern design.
