Born in Paris in 1949. Studied at the École Camondo (design school) in Paris. Established his first design firm at the tender age of 18 in 1968. Became art director at Pierre Cardin in 1969, responsible for interior and product design. Left Pierre Cardin four years later, and established UBIK, named after Philip K. Dick's science fiction novel, in 1977. Later established Starck Products in the United States. Designed the interiors of Parisian clubs "Main Bleu" and "Les Vins Douches", and became widely known. In 1982, he was commissioned by the then President of France, François Mitterrand, to design the interiors of the Elysée Palace, which brought him instant fame, and in 1984, his interior design for "Café Costa (Paris)" was featured in media around the world, earning him worldwide fame. In addition to furniture design, he has also worked on product designs such as tableware for Alessi, telephones, radios, remote controls, and portable TVs for Thomson, knives for Laguioe, and toilet brushes for Heller. The lemon squeezer "Juicy Salif", created in 1990 and considered to be synonymous with Philippe Starck, is highly regarded not only for its functionality but also for its simple and beautiful form and artistic merit, and has been certified as a permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. The Asahi Beer Super Dry Hall Flamme d'Or (Golden Flame), built in 1989 in Asakusa, Tokyo, is known as a Japanese Starck design work. Starck's manufacturing concepts are based on two things: "practicality" and "minimalism", and he thoroughly considers the role that things play and the people who use them, and his simple designs that eliminate unnecessary decoration have captured the hearts of people all over the world. He is also called a "comprehensive designer" because he works on designs in a wide range of fields, including architecture, interior design, furniture, tableware, and publications.
