A pair of footed bowls from the iittara Ultima Thule series.
Ultima Thule is a legendary island in the far north that the ancient Greeks believed to be the edge of the world, surrounded by ice and snow where the sun never sets.
The great designer Tapio Wirkkala has spent most of his career at Iittala, and is a versatile artist who has created nearly 400 pieces during his more than 40 years with Iittala. Among his most famous pieces is Ultima Thule, which was inspired by the melting ice in Lapland. It took thousands of hours to perfect the blowing technique required to create this unique surface. It is these long hours and the soul of the craftsman that are reflected in the products, making them one-of-a-kind designs.
